1Before you leave home

Write down your tow vehicle's towing capacity and payload (door-jamb sticker and owner's manual). Note your hitch type and any weight-distribution needs. Pick a maximum length that fits your driveway, storage spot and the campsites you want. Decide who will sleep in the camper most trips, and how many. Bring a tape measure, a notes app or paper, and your phone for photos.

2At every RV

Photo of the window sticker or spec sheet, so numbers match the unit you saw. Ask for dry weight, GVWR, cargo capacity and tongue (hitch) weight. Compare to your tow numbers. Walk the bed, bath and kitchen path with everyone who will use it. Sit, stand, turn around. Open storage, check the pass-through and the closet. Is there room for your real gear? Check the roof and awning height against where you plan to park. Ask what is standard and what is an option on the unit shown. Ask about warranty terms and who services it.

3Compare before you leave the building

Rank your top three units on fit, weight and layout. Write one reason for each. Note anything you could not verify at the show, and who will confirm it. Ask each dealer what they need to quote the exact unit you want.
